According to the Council for Textile Recycling, the clothing recycling industry prevents 2.5 billion pounds of post consumer textile waste from entering the solid waste stream each year. The used clothing industry provides lower income people with affordable clothing. Recycling vs. manufacturing has many "green" benefits, including:

Used clothing and other collected items are donated or sold at a discount to US based charity thrift stores.  Excess items collected are shipped to impoverished areas in the US, Africa, Central and South America.
